Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the
putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be
the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and
quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.
This scripture has been misinterpreted for years. People feel that
women aren’t supposed to make a big fuss over what they wear but I found in my
study that Peter was not saying that women are not to be beautiful or that
putting on beautiful or expensive jewelry and apparel is wrong. Instead he is saying that we are God’s
creation, made on purpose for his purpose. Every feature of our being is
designed to bring him glory and to attract unbelievers to him and that our beauty is built in. The women of
that day, much like some of us today, prostitute God’s beauty; either taking the
glory of God’s precious gift of beauty meant to honor him for our own vanity or
using it to attract man to ourselves. If
we say that we are women of God, that it is his spirit that lives within our
hearts then we should not look to fashion to define our beauty but rather be
defined by the anointing that we profess. Take pride in the spirit of God so
that we feel empowered, and men will be attracted to that.
A woman of God; a woman of Style and Spirit, has “…put on the new self,
which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of [her] creator” –Colossians 3:10.
She has a renewed mind, thinking on things that are of good report, is always
neat, always appropriately dressed for the occasion and always drawing
attention to the spirit of God – glorifying him in her appearance with wisdom.
As Peter said, beauty does not come from what a woman wears on the outside but
from her beautiful spirit which is projected from the inside. Our clothes,
jewelry, and accessories are only an extension of our spirit.
But how many women know that it is the glory of God that beautifies us
